Safer Homes: 'Beat the Burglar'

Don’t Tempt Burglars

Some homes are more tempting to burglars than others. Thieves are more likely to break in if they know you own items worth stealing.

  • Keep valuable items out of view – if you have electrical equipment worth hundreds of pounds, don’t keep it by the window where passers-by can see it.
  • Never leave a key under a doormat or on a piece of string through the letterbox – it’s the first place any burglar will look.
  • Make sure tools and ladders are kept in a secure place – burglars will happily use your own garden equipment to break into your home.
  • If you’ve taken extra security precautions, let burglars know – if you have an alarm, make sure the box can be clearly seen. If you take part in Neighbourhood Watch, display a sticker in your window. If you own a dog, put up a warning sign.

Use Security Equipment

Security equipment can make a real difference in delaying or deterring burglars, and if you install equipment approved by your insurance company, you could reduce your premiums.

  • Take a look at your home and try to work out where your security weak points are.
  • Do you have any low gates or fences? High barriers make burglars' lives more difficult.
  • Do you have any windows or doors that are completely hidden from public view? If so, install security lights and fit additional locks.
  • Fit window locks – easily visible locks may deter some thieves because this forces them to break the glass, which could attract attention.
  • Remember to remove window keys and keep them out of sight in a safe place.
  • Consider fitting an alarm – if you do, make sure you have a visible alarm box fitted to the outside of your home. If you don’t have the electrical knowledge or skill to fit an alarm yourself, make sure you get expert advice.
  • Use door chains and viewers to give you extra security if someone knocks on your door – don’t be afraid to turn people away.
  • Using UV pens, mark important possessions with your postcode and house number and keep a record of the make, model and serial numbers of all your electrical equipment. That way, if you are burgled you will find it easier to complete your insurance claim and if your property is recovered it will be easier for police to identify that it’s yours.
